Every good fairy tale starts with these immortal words.
Like all fairy tales, it begins in a small Italian town called Tocco da Casauria, nestled deep in the heart of a forest teeming with deer, wolves and bears and most important of all, the remains of an ancient Sleeping Beauty in a glass case. She is known simply as "Bella Addormentata de Tocco".
However this is a modern fairy tale, so our heroes arrive in the form of anthropologists, historians, archaeologists, forensic facial reconstructionists, DNA specialists, and friends with a passion for all things Italian, and all believers in fairytales.
“The Sleeping Beauty Project" began as an historical reconstruction and repatriation project co founded by by former criminologist & genealogist Janine D’Angelo and former lawyer and multimedia curator Anna Reeves following the journey to uncover the identity of the "Bella Addormentata de Tocco". Using the latest technology in forensic facial reconstruction, DNA analysis and geneology the project aims to reveal her true identity and to recreate the face of the mysterious "Bella Addormentata de Tocco" as a sculpture, presented as reimagined figure to the people of Tocco. In unravelling the mystery of her identity, the team hope to repatriate her bones to her descendants and find her a final resting place in the tiny village of Tocco.
"Waking Sleeping Beauty" is a 6 part podcast series & cultural multimedia project which follows the unraveling of the mystery of the "Bella Addormentata de Tocco" and is narrated by the project co founders. The podcast series and multimedia project is produced by Two Sisters and award winning podcast studio, Studio F.
